KARACHI: Sindh government has finally constituted sugarcane board that would decide regarding crushing season and price of sugarcane in the province.
According to the notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department, the board will be headed by Minister for Agriculture, Supply and Prices Department, Government of Sindh.
Two members of the provincial assembly (MPAs) Zulfiqar Ali Shah and Ms. Shaheena will also be its members.
Secretary Agriculture, Supply and Prices Department will serve as member/secretary of the board.
There will one each member from Sindh Abadgar Board, Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, Sugarcane Growers Association and Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, Sindh Zone.
However, government may also appoint another official or non-official member to the sugarcane board.
The growers had demanded start of crushing season from November 1, 2018, which demand could not materialize while there are chances of crushing season start after 30th November.
In their meeting with the agriculture minister few days back, sugarcane growers had demanded blacklisting those sugar mills that have failed to clear the dues of growers.
Growers have also moved to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to get another Rs22/40-kg, as actual price in Sindh was announced at Rs182/40-kg, while sugar mills in other provinces already paid Rs180/40-kg to the growers.
Growers said that every year they sustained losses because of delay in the crushing season by the sugar mills. They demanded the government to allow them installation of machines to produce ‘gur’ instead of selling it to sugar mills.
On Tuesday, Sindh High Court heard petition of growers against sugar mills for pending dues. The court constituted a committee of seven members including three each representatives of grower bodies and sugar mills association and cane commissioner, who will be the chair while Sindh secretary agriculture will supervise the committee. This committee would decide about pending dues of 1,300 growers within 45 days.
